§ 50. Mr. Philip Noel-Bakerasked the Minister of Transport whether he will now approve the scheme for the improvement of the South Yorkshire Navigation Canal to allow 500-ton barges to travel from the Humber to Rotherham and Sheffield.
§ Mr. CarmichaelNo. This scheme was turned down, after careful consideration, in 1967 because we were not satisfied that the economic case for capital expenditure of some £2½ million had been made out. We know of no new factors which would warrant reconsideration of that decision.
