HC Deb 21 April 1969 vol 782 cc5-6W
50. Mr. Philip Noel-Baker

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will now approve the scheme for the improvement of the South Yorkshire Navigation Canal to allow 500-ton barges to travel from the Humber to Rotherham and Sheffield.

Mr. Carmichael

No. This scheme was turned down, after careful consideration, in 1967 because we were not satisfied that the economic case for capital expenditure of some £2½ million had been made out. We know of no new factors which would warrant reconsideration of that decision.
