HC Deb 14 April 1969 vol 781 c222W
Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will make a statement about his plans for expanding the intake to medical schools in the light of the Report of the Royal Commission on Medical Education.

Mr. Edward Short

The number of entry places at pre-clinical schools will be increased from just under 2,700 in 1968–69 to 3,700 by 1975. The University Grants Committee has advised me that, apart from the new schools at Nottingham and Southampton, the increase should be achieved by expanding existing schools. £2 million has been added to the universities' building programme for 1970–72 to provide facilities for preclinical training at St. George's Hospital Medical School.
