asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give a summary of the benefits which resulted from the 4,755,680 experiments on live animals which took place in 1967 under the Cruelty to Animals Act, 1876.

Experiments carried out on live animals are directed towards such objectives as the preparation of vaccines and sera, physiological investigations including organ transplants and tissue storage, the prevention of dental caries, bone grafts, and other work which will assist in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, including the discovery, assessment and quality control of drugs.
