HC Deb 03 April 1969 vol 781 cc173-4W
Dr. Winstanley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total amount paid annually in rates on all properties occupied by the Land Commission.

Mr. Harold Lever

Properties occupied by the Land Commission are exempt from rates but, in accordance with the practice in respect of properties occupied by the Crown, a contribution in lieu of rates is paid by the Treasury; sums amounting to £73,800 have been paid to the rating authorities concerned for Land Commission properties in 1968–69.

Dr. Winstanley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many persons are employed in district valuers' departments wholly or mainly on Land Commission work.

Mr. Diamond

The valuation work for the Land Commission is integrated with the other duties of the Valuation Office, and it is not possible to identify any members of the district valuers' staff as engaged wholly or mainly on Land Commission work.

Dr. Winstanley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what is the present annual cost of that proportion of wages and salaries paid to employees of the Inland Revenue in respect of work performed on behalf of the Land Commission;

(2) what is the present cost of that proportion of wages and salaries paid to employees in district valuers' departments in respect of work performed on behalf of the Land Commission.

Mr. Diamond

About £1 million. Nearly all the work performed by the Inland Revenue on behalf of the Land Commission is carried out in the Valuation Office.
