Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Economic Affairs (1) what was the total Government assistance to industry for the financial years 1964–65 to 1967–68, inclusive, for the Northern Region of England and for Wales, respectively;

(2) what was the average assistance to industry per head of population for the years 1964–65 to 1967–68, inclusive, for the Northern Region of England and for Wales, respectively.

The following is the information.

Area involved an average commitment of £642 for each job which firms estimated would eventually be created. The comparable figure for the Northern Development Area—including the Furness peninsula—for April, 1966—March, 1968, was £660; estimates of employment arising out of assistance offered in the preceding two financial years is not available.
