HC Deb 02 April 1969 vol 781 c118W
Mr. Whitaker

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what has been the number of council houses started since May, 1968, compared with the similar period in 1967–68.

Mr. MacColl

137,600 local authority dwellings were started in Great Britain in the period 1st May, 1968, to 28th February, 1969, compared with 151,400 in the corresponding period 1967–68.

Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will give an estimate of the effect of restrictions imposed on the sale of council houses in his circular to local authorities issued in July, 1968.

Mr. Greenwood

Early last year the indications were that sales could reach a total in excess of 13,000 for the year, the bulk of these being in the four main conurbations where there is a shortage of housing to let at moderate rents. In the event, the restrictions resulted in total sales being limited in England and Wales to 8,728, including sales for which a sale price had been agreed before the circular of July, 1968. I expect that the number will fall substantially lower in 1969.
