HC Deb 02 April 1969 vol 781 c112W
67. Mr. Roebuck

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether he will make a further statement about the work of the Royal Engineers in Anguilla and elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Mr. Reynolds

Following their reconnaissance, the Royal Engineers have discussed possible tasks with Her Majesty's Commissioner and the British Development Division in the Caribbean. The major tasks under consideration are the erection of school buildings, road improvement and the provision of an improved jetty. A number of minor tasks will be carried out as soon as the soldiers have settled in.

The only other Royal Engineer task currently being undertaken in the Caribbean is the construction of Beef Island Airfield in the British Virgin Islands which is now nearing completion.

70. Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what has been the cost to public funds of the expedition to Anguilla.

Mr. Reynolds

No precise information is available yet, but the extra cost is unlikely to be very significant.
