HL Deb 24 October 1968 vol 296 cc1598-9WA
THE EARL OF HARROWBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will extend exiting Weights and Measures legislation so as to cover electricity and gas meters.

LORD BROWN

Both electricity and gas meters are already subject to statutory controls and testing, which is carried out by independent examiners of the Ministry of Power. The Hodgson Committee Report on Weights and Measures Legislation (Cmnd. 8219, May, 1951) recommended that electricity and gas meter testing should continue to be exempted from the Weights and Measures services and the Report of the Molony Committee on Consumer Protection (Cmnd. 1781, July, 1962)saw no reason to change the arrangements.
