HC Deb 14 November 1968 vol 773 cc156-7W
Mr. Galbraith

asked the Minister of Transport what was the estimated administrative cost in 1967–68 of vehicle registration and vehicle licensing respectively; and what will be the cost under the new control system in each case.

Mr. Marsh

The administrative cost of vehicle registration and licensing, and of driver licensing in 1967–68, was £8.4 million. These three functions are closely integrated and it is not feasible to assess the costs of each separately.

As stated in the Explanatory and Financial Memorandum to the Vehicle and Driving Licences Bill introduced yesterday, the cost of these functions in the first full year under the new system (planned for 1975) is estimated at £11.3 million, excluding capital charges. This compares with £12.6 million, estimated as the cost of dealing with the same forecast work load in that year under the existing system, supposing that to be possible.
