HC Deb 04 November 1968 vol 772 cc39-40W
Mr. Hooson

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what criteria he applies in deciding whether or not to approve applications for grants and loans for sewage disposal schemes in rural areas, where the schemes are technically acceptable and socially desirable.

Mr. George Thomas

Because of the continuing need to moderate the growth of capital expenditure by local authorities, I am unable to allow all sewerage schemes to proceed without delay. Priority is given to schemes, whether in rural areas or not which are essential for public health or for industrial or substantial housing development.

Mr. Hooson

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many authorities in Wales have asked for approval for sewage disposal works during the coming financial year; and to how many such schemes he has given his approval.

Mr. George Thomas

96 local authorities have applied to me for consent to carry out 206 sewerage schemes, which would call for expenditure during the next financial year; 97 of these schemes have so far been approved.
