HC Deb 04 November 1968 vol 772 cc22-3W
74. Mr. Rankin

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if, in view of the fact that factory workers in Hong Kong earn £4 10s. per week of 48 hours, what consultations he plans to have with the Governor in order to improve these low standards of payment.

Mr. Whitlock

None I do not know the source of my hon. Friend's information but in fact even the average unskilled industrial worker earns £5 5s. for a 48 hour week. These may seem low standards but they are among the highest in Asia and improving all the time, as a comparison between the wages and cost of living indices would show.
