§ Mr. TaverneThe number of persons convicted by magistrates' courts in England and Wales of cruelty to, or neglect of, children under Section 1 of the Children and Young Persons Act, 1933, were 469 in 1963, 445 in 1964, 453 in 1965 and 343 in 1966. The numbers of persons convicted of this offence by the higher courts are not known exactly, but were less than 20 in each of these years. Figures for 1967 are not yet available.
