HC Deb 07 March 1968 vol 760 cc132-3W
49. Mr. Deedes

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in how many of Her Majesty's prisons dogs are now employed; what is the total number of trained dogs; and how many handlers are in charge of them.

Mr. Taverne

Police dogs are being used at eight prisons in England and Wales. At seven other prisons 25 prison dogs are employed, and 44 prison officers have been trained as handlers. Dogs are used to patrol the perimeters of prisons; they are not employed inside the main buildings.
