asked the Secretary of State for Defence what was the cost of firing the second Polaris missile in United States waters; and if he will give details of the expenditure involved.

As the hon. Member was informed on 21st February the total estimated cost of H.M.S. "Resolution" 's demonstration and shake-down operation is £1.5 million. This figure covers the cost of both missile firings.
