§ 100. Mr. Brooksasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government (1) whether he will give details of those occasions on which radioactive oil has been burnt in thermal power stations during the past five years; and what information regarding these occasions has been made available to the local population in the vicinity;
(2) if he will give a general direction to the Central Electricity Generating Board that they should consult with the local authorities responsible for public health in those areas where radioactive fuel has been, or is to be, burnt.
§ Mr. GreenwoodMy right hon. Friend, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and I have on two occasions in the last five years authorised the burning of slightly radioactive oil at Brom-borough Power Station, Cheshire. Before doing so we consulted the Cheshire County Council and the Bebington Borough Council, and told them how much was to be burned and that, in our view, there was no risk to public health. Since the Radioactive Substances Act 1960 requires us to consult local authorities, it does not seem necessary for the Board to do so.
