HC Deb 04 March 1968 vol 760 cc28-9W
Mr. James Johnson

asked the Attorney-General what is the total number of Justices of the Peace in the United Kingdom, and how many of these are in the Civil Service and Post Office, respectively.

The Attorney-General

The precise number of Justices of the Peace cannot be stated because the figure varies from day to day by reason of appointments and retirements; but the approximate number of justices in the United Kingdom, including those on the Supplemental List, is 27,500. To obtain the figures of the number of justices in the Civil Service and Post Office would involve a considerable amount of work and expense which would not in my view be justified.
