§ Mr. John Smithasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proposals have been put to the Civil Service National Whitley Council to increase efficiency and productivity in Government Departments; and whether he will introduce outside consultants into certain Departments, with a view to obtaining a smaller, better qualified, and more highly paid Civil Service.
§ Mr. Harold LeverThe increased efficiency of the public service is one of the standing objects of the National Whitley Council. Since April 1965 Government Departments have commissioned management consultants for some 80 assignments.
