HC Deb 24 June 1968 vol 767 cc14-5W
Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans he has for encouraging the use of the Gaelic language; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ross

For an experimental period of four years I propose to give Glasgow University an annual grant-in-aid of not more than £5,000 to enable it, on the advice of a specially appointed Gaelic Books Council, to give financial support for the publication of new works in Gaelic.

I am glad that I shall be able to increase the annual grant made to An Comunn Gaidhealach under the Further Education (Scotland) Regulations 1959 from the present figure of £1,000 in 1966–68 to £4,000 in 1967–68. In addition the Highlands and Islands Development Board has approved a social grant of £2,000 to An Comunn for the year 1968–69.
