§ Mr. Clark Hutchisonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what reply he has sent to the letter from the Scottish Housewives' Association of 17th May, 1968, with reference to the appointment of women to advisory and other official or semi-official bodies.
§ Mr. RossThe Association wrote to me last month suggesting that I should appoint more women members to various advisory and consultative bodies. In the reply, copies of which I am sending to the hon. Members, it was explained that members are appointed primarily for the personal contributions which they are likely to be able to make, and not as representatives of a particular organisation, interest, or indeed sex.
