§ Mr. Alasdair Mackenzieasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware of the difficulties being experienced by laundries in Scotland as a result of the incidence of Selective Employment Tax; and, in view of the importance of laundries to the tourist industry, especially in the Highlands, if he will seek to exempt laundries in Scotland from payment of the tax.
§ Mr. DiamondThere is no case for singling out laundries from the many other services which are of importance to the tourist industry; nor is the effect of S.E.T. on laundries in Scotland different from that on laundries generally. The real difficulties facing the industry are discussed in the Prices and Incomes Board Report on Laundry and Dry Cleaning charges.
