asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, if he has reached a decision on the rates of grant for postgraduate students; and if he will make a statement.

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland and I have decided that the rates of grant for postgraduate studentships awarded by the Education Departments and Research Councils shall be increased as follows:

  1. (a) Students living in college, hall or lodgings: from £500 to £530 per annum.
  2. (b) Students living at home: from £380 to £410 per annum.

Dependants' allowances will be paid at the full rate recommended for undergraduates by the Advisory Panel on Student Maintenance Grants: that is:

The revised rates of grant will apply to new awards that start on or after 1st September from the day on which they begin and to all other awards from 1st October, 1968.
