§ Dame Joan Vickersasked the Secretary of State for Defence if, in view of the fact that the refit of H.M.S. "Ark Royal" is so far advanced that cancellation would only save about £9,000,000, and of the benefits both for the work of the Royal Navy and the protection of the Commonwealth, he will allow this refit to be completed.
§ Mr. Foley:The effects of the earlier phase-out of the carriers on the carrier refit programme are being urgently examined and a decision on H.M.S. "Ark Royal's" refit will be made as soon as possible. I am fully aware of the concern on this subject and of the need for an early decision.
