HL Deb 29 February 1968 vol 289 c1218WA
VISCOUNT FURNESS

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What the revenue from stamp duty on cheques was for the last convenient complete year; for how long this duty has been fixed at 2d.; and what they would anticipate the revenue o be from such a source, if the duty on each cheque were raised to 6d.

LORD BESWICK

The revenue from the stamp duty on cheques in the Financial year 1966–67 was £9½ million, The rate of the duty has been 2d. since 1918. If the rate were raised to 6d. the revenue might be in the region of £25 million, taking into account the probability of a consequent reduction in the use of cheques.
