HC Deb 27 February 1968 vol 759 c334W
Mr. Rose

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much was allocated in grants for museums and libraries during 1966 and 1967, giving separate figures for Scotland, Wales, Manchester, North-West England and London, respectively.

Miss Jennie Lee

Some grants are made to regional rather than city bodies, and the following is the best information available:

1965–66 1966–67
£ £
North-West England(the area covered by the North-West Museum and Art Gallery Service) 34,275 30,346
London:
(a) national institutions 4,208,150 4,829,000
(b) local museums and servicesin the South East 17,290 26,421
Wales:
(a) national institutions 497,000 567,000
(b) local museums and services 200 1,440

Comparable figures cannot be provided separately for Manchester. Grants for museums and libraries in Scotland are a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland.

No grants are made by the Department to local libraries, but the rate support grant contains an element in respect of expenditure on public libraries as well as on local museums.
