asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs whether it remains the policy of Her Majesty's Government to use the base at Akrotiri to defend the Republic of Cyprus against external threat, in accordance with the Treaty of Establishment Guarantees.

As my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Defence informed my hon. Friend on 14th February, we continue to need both our Sovereign Bases Areas for various defence purposes.

The position of the British Government under the various treaties in relation to Cyprus to which this country is a party remains unchanged.
