HC Deb 08 February 1968 vol 758 cc204-5W
Mr. Charles Morrison

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the total amount of money spent by local authorities and the Central Government on sport, giving the figures for each of the last five years.

Mr. Gordon Walker

Comprehensive statistics of actual public expenditure on capital and current account on sport in Great Britain are not available. The best estimates available relate to capital investment on sport and physical recreation and are as follows:

£million
1962–63 23.4
1963–64 29.5
1964–65 33.1
1965–66 34.1
1966–67 23.3

NOTE.—The figures cover capital expenditure on facilities exclusively for sport, on facilities for general physical recreation and on facilities used partly for sport. The figures have been assembled on an annual basis from a number of sources on the basis of forecasts of expenditure for the year concerned. In some categories the figures are based on estimated apportionments of a total forecast expenditure. It is not practicable for example to assess precisely the capital element in educational building devoted exclusively to sport. The figures provide a broad guide to the level of expenditure based on the best sources available at the time they were compiled.
