HC Deb 07 February 1968 vol 758 cc170-1W
Mr. G. Campbell

asked the Minister of Labour what was the number of new jobs created in Scotland in the period of the three years 1965, 1966, and 1967; and what was the number of jobs which ceased to exist in Scotland in the same period.

Mr. Hattersley:

I regret that this information is not available in the form requested. The only comprehensive figures showing changes in the number of jobs are obtained by comparing for different years the mid-year estimate of employees in employment, that is, the mid-year estimate of all employees, less the number registered as wholly unemployed in June. The figures show net changes only, and there is no way of identifying "jobs created" and "jobs lost".

The mid-year estimates for Scotland for the last three years are shown below.

Thousands
June,1964 2,121
June,1965 2,139
June,1966 2,143

The corresponding figure for June, 1967, should be available next month.
