HC Deb 19 December 1968 vol 775 cc449-50W
71. Mr. Frank Allaun

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many of those imprisoned or detained following the disturbances in Hong Kong in 1967 have been kept in solitary confinement, and for how long; and how many are at present held in solitary confinement.

Mr. Whitlock

The term "solitary confinement" does not appear in Hong Kong legislation but a punishment of separate confinement for a period not exceeding 28 days may be imposed on convicted prisoners for offences against prison rules.

No prisoner convicted in connection with the disturbances is undergoing separate confinement at the present time. I will send to my hon. Friend details of such prisoners who may at any time during their sentences have undergone this punishment, as soon as they can be obtained.

No detainees have been kept in solitary or separate confinement.
