HC Deb 09 December 1968 vol 775 cc4-5W
Mr. Simon Mahon

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware of the representations of the residents living in the Bootle, Litherland, Netherton, and Sefton areas, adjacent to the Liverpool and Leeds Canal, to the effect that this stretch of this unused canal should be made safe by being filled in, and the reclaimed land developed in accordance with current civic and recreational needs; and if he will take steps to develop the canal accordingly.

Mr. Alldritt

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware of the representations of the residents in the Scotland division of Liverpool, living in the area adjacent to the Liverpool and Leeds Canal, to the effect that this stretch of unused canal should be made safe by being filled in and the reclaimed land developed in accordance with current civic and recreational needs; and if he will take steps to develop the canal accordingly.

Mr. Carmichael

We are aware that some of the local residents have said that they would like to see the canal in these areas eliminated. Proposals for the future of this length of the canal are being examined by the working party set up by the local authorities, in association with the British Waterways Board. I understand that the working party is likely to report to the authorities very soon.

Mr. Simon Mahon

asked the Minister of Transport how many persons have lost their lives in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal since the 1939 to 1945 war; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Carmichael

I regret that this information is not readily available.

Mr. Simon Mahon

asked the Minister of Transport how many children have lost their lives in the Liverpool and Leeds Canal, from Lightbody Street to the Aintree Bridge, since the 1939 to 1945 war.

Mr. Carmichael

I understand that 28 children have been drowned in this stretch of canal since April, 1955. Figures before that date are not readily available.
