HC Deb 09 December 1968 vol 775 c34W
100. Mr. John Smith

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the cost to public funds of ascertaining the number of successful prosecutions of United Kingdom residents, other than authorised dealers, for speculating in foreign currencies in each of the past 10 years, and of ascertaining the value of currency concerned in these prosecutions.

Mr. Taverne

Extensive research and examination of a large number of individual prosecutions would be involved to discover which prosecutions of foreign exchange offences could properly be described as speculation and this would cost well over £50.
