HC Deb 04 December 1968 vol 774 cc508-9W
Mrs. Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the total Government expenditure, including Arts Council and Treasury grants, over the last ten years on, respectively, the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Tate Gallery, in London, and the National Gallery of Scotland, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Act, in Edinburgh.

Miss Jennie Lee

The total expenditure between 1958–59 and 1967–68 on the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and the Tate Gallery, respectively, was £5,016,582; £894,496 and £2,459,215.

The equivalent figure for the National Galleries of Scotland, which has been supplied by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland, was £1,375,102. The national galleries of Scotland, comprising the National Gallery, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, form one administrative unit and it is not possible to give the expenditure on each institution separately.

Mrs. Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the total expenditure by the Government, including Treasury grants and Arts Council grants and subsidies on the arts, in England, Scotland and London, respectively, for the last 10 years.

Miss Jennie Lee

The total expenditure between 1958–59 and 1967–68 in England was £83,148,266 and in Scotland £8,258,187. These figures cover grants to museums and galleries, the Arts Council, the British Film Institute and a few smaller bodies, but not expenditure on the maintenance of historic buildings and ancient monuments.

The breakdown of expenditure for London ever the period is not available, but I have asked the Arts Council to work this out and will write to the hon. Lady when the information is available. The figure for England includes expenditure of £14,047,037 on the national companies (Royal Opera House, Sadler's Wells, National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company).
