Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list in the OFFICIAL REPORT the names of the vessels and the occasions when foreign vessels have during the last five years infringed British fishing grounds, stating how many were prosecuted and with what results; and how many, and which British fishing vessels, were during the last five years charged in foreign courts with fishing in foreign territorial waters and with what results.

Mr. Hoy

There were 66 prosecutions of foreign vessels for infringing British fishery limits of which 65 resulted in convictions and one in an acquittal. Information about vessels which were warned but not prosecuted could not be obtained without undue expenditure of time and effort.

According to the information available, 33 British vessels were prosecuted in foreign courts for illegal fishing. There were 28 convictions and 5 acquittals, one after appeal.
