HC Deb 04 December 1968 vol 774 cc513-4W
Mr. Clark Hutchison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what legal proceedings are being taken against the pilot, crew or passengers in connection with the unauthorised landing of the Argentine-registered aircraft in the Falklands on 27th November; and what compensation is being claimed for any damage to land or livestock as the result of the landing.

Mr. Mulley

No legal proceedings are being taken in the Falkland Islands. The pilot and two passengers of the aircraft were dealt with under a local immigration ordinance. Because they did not have entry visas they were declared prohibited immigrants and warned of their right of appeal to the Governor in Council against such prohibition. They stated that they did not want to appeal and were returned to Argentina on board H.M.S. “Endurance”. No compensation is claimed for damage to land or livestock.

Mr. Clark Hutchison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what were the circumstances surrounding the landing of an Argentine-registered aircraft on the Falkland Islands on or about 27th November, 1968; and what protests he has made to the Argentine Government about this unauthorised landing.

Mr. Mulley

An aircraft apparently belonging to the Argentine newspaperCronica, and carrying two journalists from that newspaper as passengers, made an unauthorised landing on open common land some two miles from Stanley on 27th November. Representations were immediately made to the Argentine Government to the effect that Her Majesty's Government deplored this incident, and requesting that every possible step should be taken to prevent any similar incidents in future.
