HC Deb 25 April 1968 vol 763 c80W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement about the interview the British Chargé d'Affaires in Peking had recently with Mr. Anthony Grey.

Mr. William Rodgers

The Chargé d'Affaires in Peking was permitted to visit Mr. Grey in his house for 20 minutes on 23rd April. He told Sir Donald that he was in good health. He continues to have the services of his domestic staff although he is confined to one room in his house. He takes exercise twice daily and has been receiving some letters.

The worst aspect is Mr. Grey's isolation. He has three guards in his house, none of whom will talk to him in English. He says that he has not been visited by other Chinese officials.

We shall, of course, continue our efforts to secure an improvement in Mr. Grey's conditions and his early release. His detention remains indefensible.
