§ LORD BROCKWAYasked Her Majesty's Government:
What was the cost to the United Kingdom in the last twelve months for which the figures are available of (a) U.K. participations in NATO, and (b) the maintenance of U.K. troops in West Germany.
§ LORD SHACKLETONMy Lords, on the first part of the Question, it is not possible to produce figures because our contribution to NATO is not for the most part represented by single purpose, self-contained forces; generally our forces 621WA have a variety or roles. On the second part of the Question, the functional cost in 1968–69 of the British Army of the Rhine, including the brigade employed in this country while remaining under the command of the C.-in-C., B.A.O.R., is estimated at £207 million.
