HC Deb 11 April 1968 vol 762 cc313-4W
Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why he is unable to estimate the cost in a full year of the increase in Selective Employment Tax announced on 25th March on the tourist industry in Scotland and in England and Wales, respectively.

Mr. Harold Lever

Although tourism is often referred to as an industry there are in fact a large number of trades and activities which contribute to tourism. Some of these do not cater solely, or even mainly, for tourists. It is therefore not possible to identify the number of em- ployees who could be said to be engaged in the tourist industry, nor to estimate in respect of how many the tax is paid.
