§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Minister of Transport why, in view of Her Majesty's Government's policy that the employment of new staff in the Civil Service would be severely limited, two chief information officers have been appointed in his Department at salaries ranging from £3,500 to £4,500 per annum; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mr. MarshAs already announced, one appointment is to replace the Chief Information Officer transferred to another Government Department. The additional post, needed for the planned increase in work on Road Safety publicity, will be absorbed within the limits on Civil Service numbers announced by the Prime Minister on 16th January, 1968.
§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Minister of Transport whether he will give a detailed list of new appointments made in his Department since the July economy measures were announced, together with the salaries in each instance.
§ Mr. MarshI regret that the information asked for by my hon. Friend is not readily available, and could not be obtained without undue expenditure of time and money. Such new appointments as have been made have been fully consonant with the July economy measures referred to.
