HC Deb 10 April 1968 vol 762 cc275-6W
Mr. Gregor Mackenzie

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what action he proposes to take to assist servicemen to find housing accommodation on leaving the forces.

Mr. Reynolds

Very full advice about housing possibilities in civil life is given to those leaving the Services and all three Services have schemes which enable servicemen to save towards a house of their own by means of regular deductions from they pay. In addition, my right hon. Friend the Minister of Housing and Local Government has asked all local authorities not to apply their normal residential qualifications to service personnel and to treat their applications solely on the basis of housing need. I am still considering the possibility of extending to the Army and the R.A.F. the Scheme by which Naval ratings are helped to buy a house during their service by means of an advance against the man's terminal grant.
