HC Deb 09 April 1968 vol 762 cc229-30W
Sir G. Sinclair

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will give details of what he is doing to encourage youth exchanges with European Economic Community and European Free Trade Association countries; in particular, what financial help he has given in the last three years, directly or through the British Council, towards youth exchanges with Germany; and what help he will give this year.

Mr. William Rodgers

As regards the first part of the Question, I would refer the hon. Gentleman to my reply to the hon. Member for Portsmouth, Langstone (Mr. Ian Lloyd) on 29th March. The amounts spent by the British Council on Anglo-German exchanges were £16,000 in the year 1965–66 and £25,000 in each of the years 1966–67 and 1967–68. The amount allocated in the current financial year is £30,000. £4,000 was also spent each year from 1965–66 onwards on exchanges with other West European countries arranged by the Consultative Committee on European Study Tours with the help of the British Council.—[Vol. 761, c. 357.]
