51. Mr. Speed

asked the Minister of Power (1) what proportion of the annual output of deep-mined coal was stockpiled at the latest convenient date;

(2) what proportion of the annual output. of opencast coal was stockpiled at the latest convenient date.

Mr. Freeson

Undistributed stocks, which consist in varying proportions from time to time of coal from deep mines and opencast sites, are currently equivalent to 16 per cent. of annual coal production. In the year ending 23rd March, 1968, the equivalent of 3.5 per cent. of deep-mined production was added to undistributed stocks. The comparable figure for opencast coal was 8 per cent.
