HC Deb 09 April 1968 vol 762 cc221-2W
61. Mr. Rossi

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government how many houses have been affected by compulsory purchase orders made by local authorities during each of the past five years.

Mr. MacColl

The number of houses included in clearance compulsory purchase orders made under the Housing Act, 19:57 and submitted to the Minister by local authorities during the last five years were as follows:

1963 37,160
1964 41,338
1965 44,999
1966 40,019
1967 50,134

Figures for other compulsory purchase orders are not readily available.

62. Mr. Rossi

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government, how many houses have been designated as unfit by compulsory purchase orders made by local authorities during each of the past five years.

Mr. MacColl

The figures are as follows:

1963 34,208
1964 38,081
1965 41,951
1966 36,011
1967 45,756

Mr. Rossi

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government, for each of the past five years what percentage of compulsory purchase orders made by local authorities has been the subject of appeal to him; and what percentage of appeals related to houses originally designated as unfit in such orders.

Mr. MacColl

During the five years 1963–67 (inclusive) objections were received from one or more owners in respect of 72 per cent. of the compulsory purchase orders submitted for slum clearance. The figures for each year are as follows:

per cent.
1963 77
1964 75
1965 73
1966 65
1967 72

Practically all the objections related to the classification of houses as unfit. Information is not readily available about compulsory purchase orders for other purposes.

Mr. Rossi

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what percentage of the total number of houses designated as unfit in compulsory purchase orders made by local authorities has been found not to be so unfit after objections made to him, giving the figures for each of the past five years.

Mr. MacColl

During the last five years approximately 7 per cent. of those houses designated as unfit in compulsory purchase orders were reclassified as fit. Orders are not necessarily decided in the same year as they are submitted and it would be misleading to give year by year percentages in this instance.
