HC Deb 05 April 1968 vol 762 cc161-2W
Mr. Astor

asked the Minister of Transport whether drivers of vehicles fitted with town and country tyres on the rear wheels and standard tyres on the front wheels will be required to carry a spare of each type to comply with her regulations in the event of a puncture necessitating a tyre of either type being replaced.

Mr. Carmichael

We have no plans for requiring two, or even one, spare tyre to be carried. Interpretation of the tyre regulations is a matter for the courts. A driver who as the result of a puncture fitted a spare which did not match the other tyre on the same axle might be held to have contravened the regulations. It would, however, be open to the court to take into account mitigating circumstances such as the fact that the vehicle with the spare wheel in question was only being used temporarily and at a slow speed, if this were the case.
