HC Deb 05 April 1968 vol 762 c155W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Postmaster-General whether, when the opportunity presents itself, he will initiate a system of allocating telephone numbers to Government Departments in such a manner as will enable the last four figures to be in an easily remembered generally applied numerical sequence, thus obviating the necessity of remembering more than three figures preceding each department's number.

Mr. Joseph Slater

We are anxious to help our customers wherever we can and I am obliged to my hon. Friend for his suggestion. I doubt, however, whether the limited benefits of such an arrangement would outweigh the costs and upheaval of the change. Furthermore, such a system could not be universal as numbering systems vary from place to place.
