HC Deb 04 April 1968 vol 762 cc124-5W
28. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Economic Affairs whether he is aware that the lower-paid workers pay their fares to and from work out of their taxed incomes, and that workers using cars for such transport pay Road Fund tax and petrol tax out of taxed incomes, whereas a number of executives and others have such costs met by employers; and whether he will ensure that all are treated alike when drawing up his prices and incomes policy.

Mr. Frederick Lee

On the first part of the Question, the provision of free transport to and from work for an executive is a taxable emolument. On the second part, the productivity, prices and incomes policy is intended to apply to all sections of the community.
