HC Deb 03 April 1968 vol 762 cc88-9W
Mr. Hannan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what percentage of all hospital beds are occupied by the mentally ill; and of all mental patients how many are alcoholics.

Mr. Ross

During the year ended 30th September, 1967 35 per cent. of all hospital beds were occupied by the mentally ill. During the year ended 31st December, 1967 14 per cent. of those admitted to mental beds were suffering from alcoholism or alcoholic psychosis. The proportion of beds occupied by such patients at any one time is likely to be substantially less because the length of stay of alcoholics tends to be shorter than the average.
