§ Mr. Fordasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what arrangements are being made for the purchase of cars for new systems of policing.
§ Mr. CallaghanI have informed police authorities and chief officers in England and Wales that I am prepared to authorise additional expenditure during the current financial year on vehicles for new systems of policing. Most forces have sufficient local resources available for this purpose, but in some cases I have undertaken to arrange for the purchase of additional vehicles against repayment by police authorities as early as possible in the next financial year. A supplementary estimate to cover these purchases will be presented to Parliament in due course. In the meantime the necessary funds are being advanced from the Civil Contingencies Fund.
