§ Mr. Buchananasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what provisions are being made for extending the scope of the teaching of foreign languages in primary schools.
§ Mr. RossIn recent years many primary schools have introduced a foreign language; in October, 1966, a foreign language was being taught in 741 schools. It is for education authorities (and other managers of schools) to decide in the light of resources available whether a foreign language should be introduced. My Department is, however, at present engaged upon a survey of the teaching of foreign languages in primary schools which it is hoped will result in some useful guidance of general application.
