HC Deb 21 November 1967 vol 754 cc330-1W
Mr. E. Rowlands

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many square feet of space have been granted under the industrial development certificates in 1966 and the first half of 1967 in the London and South-East areas and in the West Midlands area, respectively.

Mr. Darling

The area of floor space for which industrial development certificates were issued in 1966 and the first half of 1967 in the London and South-Eastern areas and in the West Midlands area is given in the table below

1966 1967
million sq. ft. (Jan.—June) million sq. ft.
South-East (including London 13.2 10.7
West Midlands 6.4 4.1

The definition of industrial space for which industrial development certificates are required was changed in August, 1966 and the figures for 1966 and 1967 are therefore not comparable. A fuller explanation of the change is given on page 1049 of the "Board of Trade Journal" of 27th October, 1967.

Mr. E. Rowlands

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many square feet of space have been granted under the industrial development certificates in the development areas in 1966 and the first half of 1967; and what percentage this is of the total amount granted.

Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody

In 1966, 29.1 million sq. ft.; in the first half of 1967, 16.4 million sq. ft. representing 34 per cent. of the total. Because of a change in definition during 1966 a percentage for the whole of that year which would he comparable to that of 1967 is not available. The comparable percentage for the last quarter of 1966 only is 28 per cent. An explanation of the change in definition was given on page 1049 of the "Board of Trade Journal" for 27th October, 1967.
