HC Deb 21 November 1967 vol 754 cc323-4W
Mr. Clegg

asked the Minister of Labour how many men in the North-West have been retrained in Government establishments during the current year.

Mr. Hattersley

1,232 men have been trained at Government training centres in the North-West in the year ended September, 1967. When the expansion planned for 1968 is complete, it will be possible to train over 2,100 men a year in the North-West.

Mr. Randall

asked the Minister of Labour if Government training centres in the North-East, together with two additional centres contemplated take account of the anticipated training needs, together with the expected increased demand for skilled labour, arising from the inducements to firms to go to the North-East.

Mr. Hattersley

Yes, but I am keeping the need for further centres under review. Firms moving into or expanding in the North East are also eligible for financial assistance towards their additional training needs under my Ministry's Development Are is Training Grants Scheme. In addition, the Government has recently announced new schemes of Government grants to be administered by Industrial training boards to stimulate the provision of facilities for skilled training in firms in the Development Areas.
