HC Deb 15 November 1967 vol 754 cc110-1W
Mr. Farr

asked the Minister of Transport in what respect United States Army road vehicles stationed in this country are required to comply with our road safety and roadworthiness standards and regulations.

Mr. Carmichael

Road vehicles in the service of the United States Army visiting this country are required by law to comply with most of the regulations contained in Part III of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations, 1966. That part contains regulations governing the use on roads of motor vehicles and trailers and includes requirements concerned with their general condition and the maintenance of such items as the steering mechanism. braking system, lighting equipment and tyres.

Other requirements of those Regulations may well be met although there is no legal requirement for these vehicles to do so. These vehicles are not required to undergo the annual test for passenger cars and light trade vehicles which have been in use for three years.
